Control Risks is looking for an experienced analyst to cover Francophone West Africa, with a particular focus on Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso. The successful candidate will lead on our analytical coverage of political, security and business-relevant issues in Francophone West Africa, and support client engagements on the region. They will be part of a team focused on Sub-Saharan Africa within the Global Risk Analysis department.

Role tasks and responsibilities

Writing and delivering analysis

  • Provide regular and high-quality coverage of relevant developments affecting the business environment Francophone West Africa for clients subscribing to Control Risks’ online and retainer services. This will include writing updates on trends and developments across the region in domestic politics, government policy, regulation, operational and security issues.
  • Provide verbal briefings on political, regulatory and security developments in the region to clients across sectors, including but not limited to, mining, oil and gas, financial services, power and infrastructure and telecommunications.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other geographical regions on analysis of crosscutting global issues and trends where required (geopolitical trends, Islamist militancy, energy transition, social media and technology, etc.).
  • Work closely with other analysts covering West Africa. This will include challenging and accepting feedback on own analysis, and ensuring coherence with other analysts.

Consulting and client engagement:

  • Scope and write proposals for bespoke consulting engagements on Francophone West Africa, under the direction of senior colleagues and in close collaboration with colleagues from the wider team and other departments.
  • Lead on research for bespoke projects on the region in consultation with senior colleagues; research and write customised political, security and operational risk assessments on Francophone West Africa for clients.
  • Contribute to the development of compelling client deliverables and propose innovative ways to present facts and analysis to clients and assist in preparing the presentation of research in formats including PowerPoint.
  • Support and contribute to the delivery of consulting engagements for the wider region as required.

Demonstrating expertise

  • Maintain a high level of regional and country expertise on Francophone West Africa, with a particular focus on Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso through research, attendance at relevant seminars and research trips.
  • Take ownership and responsibility for determining our position and analytical line on key political and business risk issues in the Francophone West Africa region. Contribute to team discussions about broader risk issues in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Build effective relationships with the Africa analysis team and London-based colleagues, as well as other Africa-focused experts throughout Control Risks, including in Dakar, Lagos, Paris, London and other Africa-based offices.
  • Develop and effectively manage government, academic, journalistic and business contacts in the region and share knowledge about sources with other members of the desk. Use source information astutely and conduct in-person research as and when required, respecting client confidentiality.

Marketing and business development

  • Contribute to company-wide promotional publications, press releases and sales initiatives.
  • Contribute to regional marketing initiatives including thought leadership (articles, blogposts, podcasts, etc.), and represent Control Risks as a country expert at conferences when required.
  • Respond to media queries on the region as required under the direction of more senior members of the Africa analysis team
